Bab El Had

Place Bab el Had

Bab El Had, whose name evokes the Sunday market (Souk el-Had) that used to be held there, is one of the most iconic monumental gates in Rabat, guarding the southwestern entrance to its historic medina. Built at the end of the 12th century during the reign of the Almohad caliph Yaacoub El Mansour, this imposing defensive structure was an integral part of the fortified system of Ribat al-Fath.

Much more than a mere relic of the past, Bab El Had is now a dynamic urban crossroads and a popular meeting place, symbolizing the harmonious transition between the modernity of the new city and the authentic bustle of the traditional medina.
