Twenty Centuries of History...
The first traces of human presence in Rabat date back to the 8th century B.C., at the current site of Chellah. This strategic location was first established as a trading post by Phoenician navigators, like other settlements founded along the Moroccan coast. The city later came under Carthaginian influence, although its economic and commercial importance in the region during that era remains partially shrouded in history.
This protohistoric past constitutes the first chapter of a city whose development would span nearly three millennia.
Visiting Rabat means immersing yourself in a true open-air history book, where every monument, every stone tells a page of Morocco’s rich history and its multiple influences. It’s also discovering how a modern capital has managed to preserve its historical soul while firmly embracing the 21st century.
